I just (Dec 17, 2010) read on Betanews that Yahoo is planning to close Delicious (formerly del.icio.us) bookmarking service as part of a general corporate restructuring. Other services facing the axe are Altavista, Yahoo Picks, Yahoo Bookmarks, Yahoo Buzz, MyBlogLog, Alltheweb, MyM. And even the Yahoo traffic APIs are set to close!!!
I for one have immediately backed up all my Delicious bookmarks. You can also do the same from https://secure.delicious.com/settings/bookmarks/export.
I now begin the search for an alternate, and popular, bookmark service. Reader suggestions will be accepted. As long they don’t require me installing a software or browser extension 🙂
I really liked Delicious because of the opportunity it afforded to find interesting links via other user postings. But I haven’t been visiting it all that often over the past 4-5 months because of bookmark repetition, junk and domains in languages I couldn’t read.
My ideal online bookmark service should be able to set the website language via a simple drop-down interface. With the option to use an online translator so everyone can understand what the site is about. The service should also be able to tell me if the link I’m adding pre-exists in the database and if so displays the user count. Clicking the count link would display user names with their link descriptions and classification tags. I would then have the option to copy any one description or tags for my entry.
